L.A. COBRA Interview

*** TRANSLATION BUTTON BELOW ***

Hallo Rocker!

Diesmal entführe ich Euch nach Südafrika! Hier kommen nämlich die Jungs von L.A. COBRA her.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Hi Don, nice to meet you! How are you doing?

Don:
Hey Ornella, I’m good and you? busy with lots of exciting things..hehe How are you? So jealous of your trip to Mexico..haha looked amazing there!

COMEBACKSTAGE:
I’m doing great, thanks! Mexico has been amazing: great landscape, great food and great people! The best mix… But let’s start right away and talk about music… Tell me your bands story!

Don:
We’ve got quite a story for you, it all began on the 5 November 2005, we got together with some friends who were in a band called „The Terrorists“ and when i joined the day we became „L.A. Cobra“ from then till now the only Sleaze Metal/Hair Metal, Glam Metal band on the African continent. We went through a bunch of line-up changes, but the current line up Callie The Animal, Slade, Evil and myself are the longest running(since 2013) L.A. Cobra line-up to date as Callie and I are the only two from the original line-up when we started in 2005.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Where does your bands name come from and how did you came up with the idea for it?

Don:
It just happened within the first line-up, the guys had the idea as its a great sounding catchy name for a Hair Metal band, and a soon as i joined we became L.A. Cobra, years later in a radio interview it came out as Long African Cobra…haha

COMEBACKSTAGE:
How is it to be in a Rockband in South Africa? Is there a big Rock/Metal scene? And do you think living somewhere else in the world would make it easier for you as a band?

Don:
To do what we are doing its extremely difficult, but somehow we always manage to get by if you know what i mean, lots of venues are now closing down which is sad, but theres alot of interest in rock/metal music and it will never die. Yes there is definitely a big rock/metal scene here in South Africa, when Iron Maiden played here in the 2016 there was 45000 people at the Johannesburg show if i remember correctly, so the crowd is here…haha We were fortunate enough to open for German band Blind Guardian a few years, which was very cool actually, so there’s definitely a market here.

I definitely think living somewhere else would make things alot easier for us, as we must get a visas for most countries just to perform and also travelling costs are ridiculous when our biggest audience is abroad.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Where do you see yourself musically seen, what are your bands influences?

Don:
Musically the genre that we are playing is something that i like playing as a musician, i know a couple of guys who are in bands and not really happy with the direction they are going and am stuck with it coz its their source of income. But i love what we do, and so do the rest of the guys, and it excites us to play and write. We have so much energy and chemistry when the 4 of us are together. So many influences WASP, Skid Row, Motley Crue and GnR just to name a few and also some newer bands like Hardcore Superstar and Crashdiet that definitely set the standard for the The New Wave of Hair Metal in the post 80‘s bands

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Which topics do you talk about in your songs?

Don:
The topics we write about are universal, obviously the good old sex, drugs and rock n roll, but also on past experiences, relationships, sometimes its just nice to tell a story and get peoples minds wondering, but what ive noticed is that different people get a different message from the same song, so its all about the listener and what they make if it really.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
You’re on the road a lot – where are your next Tour-Stopps?

Don:
We got a few shows in South Africa, and waiting for confirmations from local festivals later in the year.

So far we invited to play at Rock n Skull Fest 2018 in Illinios(USA) some more USA dates will be added.

Then in 2019 we embark on our first 14 day European/Scandinavian Tour where we will start at „The Sleaze Fest 2019“, Bochum (GEM) alongside bands like Crashdiet, The Cruel Intensions, The Trenchdogs, Wildstreet and more to be announced, we really cant wait for this, we also gonna announce some more dates from ourside soon, so please checkout our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/lacobraband

COMEBACKSTAGE:
How many records did you release by now and how were they called?

Don:
We’ve released 3 albums so far:

Cherry Hill in 2006,
How Much Snake Can You Take?? In 2010
Shotgun Slinger in 2017

LA_Cobra Main

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Tell me more about SHOTGUN SLINGER…

Don:
We started writing Shotgun Slinger in 2013 no idea where it was heading, what is was gonna be called..haha just went and write and record when inspiration struck. The drums and first takes we recording 2014 and built on that from there, we had so many changes but it was worth it i reckon..haha. We went through tons of material actually and some songs didnt make it on the album… long story short ..haha then i ended up going to Sweden in 2016 for the Rest in Sleaze Festival, and had a talk with Martin Sweet from Crashdiet to mix, master and produce one song for us, after we got Martin’s mix for the song “Ride“ back we just knew he had to do the whole album as he brought the album to life, Martin also did some backing vocals for us on the album, he is one talented brother, and am super honoured to have worked with him ❤

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Are you already working on new material?

Don:
OH yes…haha we already have a complete song, just sorting out some lyrics.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
If you should convince a young person to listen to rock music, which song would you show him/her and why?

Don:
This is difficult…haha there‘s so many amazing songs out there..haha

I guess it would be Twisted Sister – “We’re not gonna take it“ for me it‘s got every quality of one of the most perfect rock songs ever written, its timeless and i think a young person if they’re not into rock music yet, would immediately get hooked on the beat of the song, and the sing a long chorus…and Dee Snider is visually a very entertaining mastermind..haha

COMEBACKSTAGE:
If you could have a fantasy dinner with three persons of your choice, who would you invite?

Don:
Vince Neil, Will Farell and Slash..haha think that could be hilarious and entertaining.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Thanks a lot for your time Don! The last words are yours…

Don:
Thank you Ornella, its a huge honor to talk to you, and thank you for your time.

Yeah, thanks for all your support in Europe, you guys really surprised us with your incredible support, CANT FUCKING WAIT TO see you next year in Germany at the Sleaze Fest 2019, in the meantime get our new album “Shotgun Slinger“ so we can sing a long when im there..hehe

Bleibt up to date indem Ihr ihre Website oder Facebookseite besucht.

Eure Ornella.
Long live Rock’n’Roll!
