COMEBACKSTAGE:
Tell me your bands story…

Remco:
So, it all started back in 2011, when Wouter and I met. We were both still little kiddo’s pretty much. But we had one thing in common: a passion for rock ‘n roll music. Loud, raw, fast ‘n sweaty. We were (and still are) both die hard AC/DC fans so we decided to link up. We got together and we jammed “Highway To Hell”. We immediately clicked. From that point on it was obvious that we had to start our own band.

That’s when our quest for other band members began, haha. It wasn’t easy, but we did it. In 2014 we found Tuur and in November of that year Jonas joined us. We got a gig offer but we didn’t have singer yet. We contacted him last minute to help us out, we did the gig and he decided to stay. At that point our musical tastes were expanding beyond the stuff we listened to as a kid. We did some cover gigs and we decided it was time to write our own songs.

We released our first single “Burn You Down” in August of 2015. It turned out to be quite successful and from that point on we’ve been writing our own shit, ya know. It’s so much more satisfying to play original songs. We’ve done some pretty cool shows, Suikerrock 2018 (BE), for example. And a few support gigs for Hell In The Club etc…

And oh yeah, in late 2018 we went from 4 to 5 people when Tim joined us on keys!

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Who’s part of the band and who does what? 😉

Remco:
We’ve got Jonas De Graef on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Wouter Vandommele on drums, me (Remco Geerens) on lead guitar and backing vocals, Tuur bries on bass and last but not least Tim De Houwer on keys and backing vocals.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Where does your bands name come from and how did you came up with the idea for it?

Remco:
Haha, funny story. I came up with it a few months after I met Wouter. I must’ve been like 15 years old. We were thinking about possible names for our band, and one night I was sitting behind my desk, thinking of cool names… I wanted a name that could be shouted by the people in the crowd, ya know, so I came up with the letters “DTC“. In my dreams people would be shouting “D! T! C!“. Hasn’t happened yet, haha. But yeah from there I went on by giving each letter a word to go along with it. Just some random dirty teenager words, haha. I suggested the name to Wouter. He laughed and he liked it, so we rolled with it. 8 years later the name is still here!

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Where do you see yourself musically seen, what are your bands influences?

Remco:
Difficult question, since we have so many influences. I wouldn’t consider us a “full 80’s glam” band, nor a metal band. I’d say we’re just a solid hard rock band.

We’re a band that’s quite difficult to label. You see a band like Poison and you know “ah yeah, that’s glam” and you see a band like Slayer and you know “ok, that’s thrash”. That’s not the case with us. It depends from song to song. We’ve got songs that are straight up metal, and songs that lean closer to pop rock. And everything in between. We love variety, ya know.

We’ve got a super wide range of inluences. AC/DC, Santa Cruz, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Skid Row, Ratt, Airbourne, Steel Panther, Pantera, Greta Van Fleet, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Dokken, Lynch Mob, Warrant, Alice In Chains, Bon Jovi, Nirvana, Steelheart, Lost Society, Guns N‘ Roses… But also bands like Status Quo, The Beatles, ABBA, The Kinks, George Thorogood,… Some modern stuff like YUNGBLUD and Tampe Impala…

Hell, I even get some lyrical inspiration from 90’s/early 2000’s gangsta rap. DMX, Big Pun, NWA, Big L… and I know Wouter really loves Parkway Drive and Jonas is into Avenged Sevenfold. As you can see the list goes on and on…

We’re no “metal elitists”. We don’t shy away from anything. If it’s good, we listen to it and we use it as an influence for our music.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
How many records did you release and how are they called?

Remco:
We released a couple of singles (Burn You Down, Aim For The Stars, Straight To Hell, etc…) and one EP called “Stand And Fight” .

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Which topics do you talk about in your songs?

Remco:
Anything that happens in my life. I always write from a personal point of view. I’m just a regular dude with regular interests and issues in life so I think people will be able to relate. Could be anything, ya know… Anger, sex, partying, love, hate, missing a certain person, a break up, alcohol, issues with authority, loneliness,… the stuff we all go through. I’m not the kinda guy to write about slaying dragons or dancing with hobbits. I’ll leave that to other bands, haha.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
What are your experiences as a young rock band?

Remco:
Being in a young rock band is pretty much the best thing ever. You get to play an instrument, bang your head on stage, scream and shout, see new cities, meet new people… together with the other guys in the band. It creates a bond and it’s a great outlet for frustrations. I wouldn’t wanna do anything else in life. Only downside is that some local rock scenes are dying out… but we’re here to keep rock ‘n roll alive!

COMEBACKSTAGE:
What are your goals with the band?

Remco:
WORLD DOMINATION BABY! Haha, we’ll see. We definitely wanna tour through some other countries. Germany, Finland, the UK, France… that would be sick. We just wanna spread our music and our kick ass rock ‘n roll attitude! Touring the US would be amazing as well. And of course we wanna record and release our first full length album! Supporting bigger bands, like Santa Cruz, is another goal.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Why do you really want to make it and what do you do to make it work?

Remco:
We were born to do this. It’s in our blood, ya know. We wanna do this for real. We wanna show what we got. We wanna make a CHANGE in peoples lives. We wanna inspire them, touch them with our music/lyrics, we wanna make them feel like a part of our gang, we wanna make them feel like they belong in this world. Even if they sometimes think they don’t.

We make it work by giving it ALL we got, every night again. Show after show. If we’re not sweating and breathing heavily afterwards it wasn’t a good show haha. We’re wild, hot and sweaty. And people can sense that. They love it. They love the combo of our raw attitude and our catchy rock tunes. We’re also very active on social media like Instagram (@dirtytoycompanyofficial). And just a lot of verbal promo when we talk to people, haha. All that stuff helps.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Which song of your band should everyone know and why?

Remco:
Even though our sound has kinda changed since then, I’d say our first single: Burn You Down.

Shit’s lit dawg! Haha.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
If you could support any band on tour, who would it be?

Remco:
Oof, not an easy question. If we lived in the 70’s/80’s we’d say AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Mötley Crüe,… Nowadays: Santa Cruz, Steel Panther, Airbourne or Greta Van Fleet.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
Where are your upcoming shows?

Remco:
JUN 1 – Sjamprock -Roeselare (BE)

SEP 21 – VZW Etalage Café – Heusden-Zolder (BE)

SEP 28 – Highway 13 – Geel (BE)

NOV 1 – Cafe PleXat – Dessel (BE)

APR 25 (2020) – Art Rock Café Paenhuys – Tessenderlo (BE)

COMEBACKSTAGE:
What do you guys do as a main job?

Remco:
3 of us are still in college/university and 2 of us work at Acerta. Something with insurances and wage calculation… money stuff, haha. Wouter is also a part time gigolo. Jk.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
If you should convince a young person to listen to rock music, which song would you show him/her and why?

Remco:
I’d pic „It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ’n roll“ by AC/DC. It sums up everything about the rock n roll life and it’s a kickass tune. It’s been one of my favourites since I was a kid. Bon Scott is the man!

Rock music rules. It’s the most raw and powerful thing on this planet. It’s the ultimate form of freedom. It’s the ultimate drug. It’s the perfect escape from the daily grind. It’s so primal. Kinda like sex, haha. It just straight up fucking rules.

COMEBACKSTAGE:
If you could have a fantasy dinner with three persons of your choice, who would you invite?

Remco:
I could think of a thousand people. But I’d go with Archie Cruz, Bon Scott and Jani Lane.
